Nokia is Not Making Consumer Phones Again

Nokia issued a statement slamming rumors of plans to make a comeback as consumer phone brand.

Last week a rumor surfaced that Nokia plans to make consumer phone again. Nokia sold their mobile phone business to Microsoft for $7 billion back in 2013. A return into the mobile phone business sounded far fetched already. The rumor got though so big that Nokia felt the need to release an official statement today.

The brief statement says: “Nokia notes recent news reports claiming the company communicated an intention to manufacture consumer handsets out of a R&D facility in China. These reports are false, and include comments incorrectly attributed to a Nokia Networks executive. Nokia reiterates it currently has no plans to manufacture or sell consumer handsets.”

Nokia just acquired Alcatel-Lucent in a $16.55 Billion deal. The focus of Nokia is clearly on the infrastructure side and not anymore on the consumer busines. Nokia once made the most popular phones, but they missed the train on the touch-screen enabled smartphone completely. Samsung and Apple demolished Nokia and Microsoft just picked up the pieces and still struggles to gain a significant market share with the Microsoft Lumia phones.
