OS X Yosemite Handoff Won’t Be Compatible With Every Mac

Apple’s efforts towards ensuring a mutually intelligible experience between iOS and OS X might not have turned out the way we were expecting. We finally got to see the Continuity movement at the Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this month and we must say there were pretty impressive features on the go such as Handoff and we are sure they are largely going to benefit Apple’s ecosystem as a whole but like always there’s one catch to this approach.

As it appears, some older Macs running on OS X 10.10 Yosemite and iDevices running iOS 8 mightn’t be able to take advantage due to the integral role that Bluetooth 4.0 (LE) plays. In case you are wondering if your machine is going to fall under this category then you can check the Mac compatibility checklist which lists all devices that can run OS X Yosemite. But the disappointing thing is that this lack of Bluetooth LE in some machines could hamper Apple’s aspirations for Continuity across the board.

As we mentioned earlier, Handoff is the most feature of the Continuity project. With this new feature, users can start up a project on their Macs and later continue it on any other platform such as iPad, iPod touch or iPhone (and vice-versa). We think that this is a great way to enhance productivity but the feature appears to be still under the works as it did not function as a polished product in the Developer Preview of OS X Yosemite.

•Retina MacBook Pro (mid-2012 and above)

• iMac (late 2012 and above)

• Mac mini (mid-2011 and above)
