Whoever heard of python meat being used in a pizza? However, python pizza is one of the specialties in a Florida restaurant! Termed the Everglades Pie, it also includes other optional flavors such as frog’s legs and alligator sausage.
Evan’s Neighborhood Pizza is a little restaurant in Fort Myers, Florida that appears to be your ordinary pizzeria. But there is more than meets the eye…or palate! Among some of the types of pizza the eatery offers are python pizza and other optional additions.
The choices include alligator sausages, frog’s legs, hog meat and swamp cabbage. This bizarre menu covers almost every creature (or plant) that can be found in Florida. The Burmese pythons were becoming a nuisance in the region. So the locals decided to do something about them. They started eating them. And each medium-sized python pizza doesn’t come cheap. It costs at least $45.
The restaurant owner is a man who likes to experiment. The meat from the python has to be marinated and then cooked and re-cooked. Even then it maintains its chewy consistency. Those tourists who want a taste of the wild side ought to try it. As for the frog’s legs, they taste like poultry. The python though is a gamier delicacy.
“I’m very adventurous when it comes to food, that’s for sure,” owner Evan Daniell, 52, told the Daily News on Thursday. “You have different flavors throughout each bite.”
However, this is just the beginning. The man who owns the restaurant wants to explore even further into alternative cuisines. He is planning a road-kill pizza. This monstrosity will include meat from raccoons, armadillos and possums. Now, that is definitely weird!
