Rachael Taylor and David Tennant Cast in Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones Netflix series

Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones is shaping with casting Rachael Taylor as Hellcat and David Tennant as the dastard villain Kilgrave. But what does that mean for Jessica Jones?

DC and Warner Bros. TV aren’t the only ones dropping hints about upcoming shows. Marvel broke news on the second of its’ Netflix series, A.K.A. Jessica Jones, this week and the news was pretty impressive.

Variety‘s latest update says Rachael Taylor will be playing Trish Walker, best friend to Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) and syndicated talk show host. As a former model and television child star, “Patsy” Walker wore some spandex of her own as superhero Hellcat. In Jones, Walker will be helping the new detective unravel a big mystery in the 13-episode series.

Set in Hell’s Kitchen, the same part of New York City that Daredevil lives in, the former superhero suffering from PTSD and looking to make her own name as a worthwhile detective. Daredevil’s set to premiere in April, so completing the cast is imperative to Marvel Studios if they want to stay in track.

Taylor’s known for her work as Jane Van Veen in ABC’s 666 Park Avenue and Abby Sampson in the television remake of Charlie’s Angels. She’s also appeared on Grey’s Anatomy as Dr. Lucy Fields. Her most recent role was in 2014’s The Loft.

Executive producer and showrunner Melissa Rosenberg (Dexter) views Trish as “a star and a powerhouse” and feels that Taylor “is all that and more!” The cast seems to be slowly rounding out.

Executive producer and Marvel’s head of television, Jeph Loeb, continued to compliment the actress. “Rachael’s ability to embody a character that must balance both the darker and lighter elements of our series will provide a perfect emotional anchor for Jessica Jones.”

“Rachael blew us away with her grounded, humanizing take on Trish, adding yet another layer to the complex, emotional story we’re telling with this series.”

But a superhero-turned-P.I. can’t just have a best friend cast right? Every story needs a villain.

Doctor Who‘s David Tennant is set to appear as Kilgrave, a man from her past that’s sending the superhero world into a tailspin. At least, according to Marvel and Variety.

“I’m so honored and excited by the prospect of David inhabiting this multifaceted character.” Rosenberg seemed over the moon at the casting choice. “He can deliver the most heart-wrenching moment to the driest of lines, and all points in between. He’ll make Kilgrave a truly original villain.”

Recently, Tennant played a detective looking to uncover the murder of a small child in Fox’s Broadchurch remake, Gracepoint, but the show wasn’t picked up for a second season. He’s also known for stage acting in Shakespeare plays, too. Loeb, agreed with Rosenberg’s enthusiasm.

“Anyone familiar with David’s work knows he brings an incredible level of dedication to any role he inhabits, a level we knew we would need from the man playing Kilgrave.” He also hints at some upcoming differences in Tennant’s previous work.

“While most know him for his roles as a hero, we can’t wait to unleash a whole new side of this talented actor.”

Dr. Zebediah Killgrave /4/be a solid, binding tie to the various Netflix/Marvel properties (Daredevil, A.K.A. Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and the Defenders). Originally known as a Soviet spy-turned-criminal named Purple Man, Killgrave went after Daredevil before moving on to Jessica Jones. In Marvel’s universe, Hell’s Kitchen seems to need a lot of superheroes.

If the Netflix series references Kilgrave’s misdeeds of Jones, there will be a very dark element to the series from the beginning and he’s tied to her most recent problems. Maybe having Trish around isn’t such a bad idea in the beginning for Jessica after all.

Does this mean Tennant /4/appear in more shows? Marvel isn’t talking, but fans would absolutely tune in to see one of the most popular Doctors in recent history turn into a menacing evil.

Late last year, Mike Colter was officially announced as Luke Cage, Jones’s romantic partner and a superhero on his own. Daredevil stars Charlie Cox (Boardwalk Empire, The Theory of Everything) and developed by Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Cloverfield writer, Drew Goddard.

Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones is set to premiere sometime in late 2015 on Netflix.
