Shawn Mendes is the latest teen heartthrob who caught fame through the social media site Vine!
Shawn Mendes has recently been making headline as the latest teen artist to have dominated the Billboard 200 chart. The 16 year old Canadian teen transformed his online stardom into a top album entitled ‘Handwritten’, currently the number one album on the Billboard 200 chart.
While the record does not contain a radio hit the album has been streamed more than 4.8 million times online and has sold 106,000 copies. The Canadian heartthrob gained success through the social media when he uploaded covers by Lana Del Ray and One Republic on the video app Vine.
The 6 second video uploading app Vine was the platform used by Mendes to launch his music career which ended up with him being signed by the Island Records and released his first album last summer. Mendes is currently on tour with other stars that launched themselves on Vine such as Nash Grier and Cameron Dallas.
Although the radio has largely ignored Mendes he has quite a large following on the social media and his fans seem to be extremely loyal as his videos on vine have received more than 367 million streams or views.
It seems only 6 seconds are more than enough to shoot an artist to stardom if they make a big enough impact. The first single by Mendes entitled ‘Something Good’ only reached the number eighty on the Billboard Hot 100 chart but the artist is a star in training. Mendes is also going to open for the pop starlet Taylor Swift at the Gillette Stadium in July.
When Mendes was asked about his rising star of fame he replied to NYTimes that the key is to play it cool so no one can detect you are actually an amateur in the business.
