Sling TV launches on Amazon Fire TV and Fire Stick

Amazon announced that the new Sling TV service is now available on Amazon streaming devices.

Cord cutters can now use the new Sling TV service on the Amazon Fire TV and Amazon Fire Stick. With Sling TV consumers can watch live Television without a Cable contract. Currently Sling TV offers Sling TV opened up its service for everyone earlier this week. For $20/month Sling TV offers over a dozen channels including ESPN and soon AMC.

To mark the launch of Sling TV, customers who purchase 3 months of Sling TV service can now get an Amazon Fire TV Stick for free or opt for $50 off a Fire TV (normally $99).

Besides Sling TV multiple other apps have launched recently on the Fire TV platform including FOX Sports GO, Flappy Birds Family, Game of Thrones – A Telltale Games Series and Minecraft Pocket Edition.

“The growth of apps and games available on Amazon Fire TV has been tremendous since launch—selection is up 5x since April, and many popular titles such as FOX Sports GO and Flappy Birds Family have launched exclusively on the Fire TV platform,” said Steve Rabuchin, Vice President Amazon Appstore. “We’re especially excited to be one of the first platforms to launch the Sling TV app—we think Fire TV and Fire TV Stick customers are going to love it.”

Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick plug into a HDTV for easy and instant access to Netflix, Prime Instant Video, Hulu Plus, WatchESPN, SHOWTIME, video rentals, and more. The Amazon Fire TV competes with the Apple TV and the Fire Stick is an alternative to the popular Google Chromecast.

Right now Sling TV is an acceptable solution for cord cutters, but number of channels is still too low to be a full alternative to cable. It remains to be seen how popular Sling TV will become. The availability on the Fire TV platform will give it a noticeable push.
