A new report sourced from the Taiwanese supply chain says that Sony Mobile aims to ship 38 million smartphones in fiscal 2015. This is a bit less than last year.
Sony is no heavyweight in the smartphone market. The Japanese electronics company is not ranked under the top 5 smartphone manufacturers according to IDC. This is not going to change apparently. Digitimes cited sources from the Taiwanese supply chain that Sony plans to ship 38 million smartphones in fiscal 2015 (April to March).
This is over a million less than Sony Mobile shipped last year. Sony is focusing more on mid-range and high-end smartphones, abandoning the entry-level market. This is would explain the lower sales volume.
Sony’s latest smartphone offerings include the Xperia Z3 and Xperia T2 Ultra. Sony will soon sell the new Xperia M2 Aqua, a waterproof smartphone. Waterproofing is one of the differentiators that Sony is bringing to the smartphone market.
Samsung and Apple dominate the smartphone market. Features like mobile payment solution are seen to keep Apple and Samsung on top and smaller manufacturers will continue to struggle gaining marketshare.
