Stephen King series ‘The Dark Tower’ to be picked up by Sony in order to make movie and TV series. Warner Bros had dropped this deal 3 years ago with Stephen King.
Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group chairman, Tom Rothman has announced that Sony Pictures has teamed up with MRC in order to co-finance ‘The Dark Tower’. ‘The Dark Tower’ is Stephen king’s novel series that is set in a world woven with magic and revolves around gunslinger Roland Deschain. Sony and MRC have decided to make a movie and a TV series.
The script is going to be based on the first book in the series, The Gunslinger. The film is going to be a blend of horror and fantasy. Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner have written the latest draft of the script, according to Deadline.
Moreover Sony and MRC will be going out to filmmakers with this script and want to put the project on the fast track. Several stars including Javier Bardem and Russell Crowe want to get the role in this project. However the role will not be finalized until the director for the movie is selected.
Stephen King who was quite upset with Warner Bros’s decision to drop his project seemed quite pleased now. He stated that he was very excited that finally ‘The Dark Tower’ will be appearing on the screen. He also stated that those who have long waited for this are finally going to get what they wanted and that this approach by Sony and MRC is a brilliant approach to his books.
Tom Rothman’s biggest challenge was to create franchises when he took over as chairman. All the studios have global franchises and it was time for Sony Pictures to have one too and Rothman has found one for the studio with a wide built in fan base.
