Comcast Sports Bay Area Warriors Insider Monte Poole first broke the news on /4/3, citing various league sources. 

ESPN’s Marc Stein’s league sources also confirmed the news on Sunday. The league will reportely bestow the honor on Curry as early as Monday, /4/4, during a pre-game ceremony against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Poole says the schedule of the NBA MVP ceremony “remains flexible” and could occur sometime between Games 2 and 3.  

Curry becomes the first Warriors player in their 53-year history in Northern California to be named the league’s Most Valuable Player, per Poole.

Yahoo! Sports’ Eric Freeman says the late Wilt Chamberlain actually won the first MVP award for the Warriors franchise, but did so when it was still located in Philadelphia during the 1959-60 NBA season.

Houston Rockets shooting guard James Harden finishes the 2014-15 NBA MVP race in second place, per CSN Bay Area.  

Other MVP contenders include the Cleveland Cavaliers’ LeBron James, the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Russell Westbrook, the New Orleans Pelicans’ Anthony Davis and the Los Angeles Clippers’ Chris Paul, per Stein.

When ESPN asked Curry about his chances of securing this season’s MVP plum on Sunday, he appeared to be nonchalant:

“I honestly have no idea. It’s obviously just…in the middle of a playoff series, it’s hard to kind of separate yourself with other things that /4/or /4/not happen.

“Obviously I know what the situation is, and just trying to focus on the game. And if I get a call tomorrow, I’ll definitely be happy, and there will be a lot of people that can be proud of that moment, as well, and we’ll enjoy it.

“But right now I’m happy we won Game 1. I’ll wake up tomorrow a fresh new day, and we’ll see what happens.”

According to The Bay Area News Group’s Tim Kawakami, Curry’s parents, Dell and Sonya, broke the news to him over dinner after the 101-86 Game 1 win over the Grizzlies on /4/3. 

Curry scored 22 points and recorded seven assists in that game to lead the Warriors to a 1-0 lead in that best-of-seven second-round series. Shooting guard Klay Thompson added 18 points while swingman Draymond Green chipped in with 16 for Golden State, per ESPN.

Center Marc Gasol had 21 points and nine rebounds while power forward Zach Randolph finished with 20 points and nine rebounds for the Grizzlies, who opened the sereis against the Warriors without starting point guard Mike Conley, Jr.

The ESPN update mentions Conley sat on the Memphis bench in a suit as he is still recovering from injured bones in his face following an injury during Game 4 of the first-round series against the Portland Trail Blazers. 

Golden State shot 50.6 percent from the field for the game. The Warriors led, 61-52, at the half and never looked back to the delight of a sellout crowd clad in golden yellow shirts at Oakland’s Oracle Arena, per ESPN. 

The 27-year-old Curry averaged 23.8 points, 7.7 assists and 2.0 steals per game to lead the Warriors to the NBA’s best record and the No. 1 seed in the West, per Kawakami. 

Poole stresses Curry’s 91.4 percent free-throw shooting percentage, 44.3 percent three-point shooting percentage and 48.7 percent field-goal shooting percentage led all NBA point guards this season.
