‘The Golden Era’ scoops up all the major awards including Best Film, Best iDrector, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction and Best Costume and Make Up Design at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

‘The Golden Era’ a biographical drama about the famous Chinese writer Xiao Hong won all the prominent awards at the Hong Kong Film Awards. The biographical drama won several high profile awards such as the Best Film Awards and the Best Director Award for Ann Hui.

Other awards won by ‘The Golden Era’ include best cinematography, best art direction, best costume and the best make up design categories at the Hong Kong Film Awards. The Hong Kong Film Festival is currently in its 34th year and ‘The Golden Era’ was the 2015 film of the ceremony.

‘The Golden Era’ is about a Chinese novelist who lived in the 1930’s named Xiao Hong and details his short life for a three hour on the big screen. ‘The Golden Era’ is filmed in the Mandarin language and was produced by film companies in both China and Hong Kong.

According to Ann Hui on the red carpet of the Hong Kong Film Awards there is more of a need to make film from the local Hong Kong culture. Rather than collaborating with China, the production companies from Hong Kong should make independent films because the province has a rich and colorful life in the film industry.

The director of ‘The Golden Era’ further elaborated Hong Kong had long had distinct topics for film making that are banned in China. Taboo topics or subjects such as horror stories, horror mixed with Kung Fu, Kung Fu with comedy or triads etc. are censored in China and they can be better explored in film making in Hong Kong.

Ann Hui has also won the award for the Best Director at both the Asian Film Awards and the Golden Horse Film Festival for ‘The Golden Era’.
