Apple revealed numbers of the U2 Songs of Innocence promotion on iTunes.
Apple gave every iTunes users a free gift after the iPhone 6 announcement on September 9. The gift of a free U2 album did not make everybody happy and there was lots of criticism even triggering Apple to release a removal tool. The promotion was though still a staggering success.
Of the 500 million iTunes users, 26 million have completely downloaded the U2 Songs of Innocence Album. Apple’s Senior VP of Internet Software and Service Eddy Cue told Billboard that 81 million Apple customers have “experienced” the album in some way. Eddy Cue puts the 26m download in perspective to the overall U2 downloads on iTunes. Since iTunes opened back in 2003, 14 million customers have bought U2 music. Apple doubled that number with the album giveaway. Apple’s gift clearly will pay off for U2 moving forward.
U2 Songs of Innocence is still free until October 13. On October 14 a deluxe edition of the album will be released.
