Vienna Tests Gay Themed Pedestrian Signals

Vienna has placed the Gay themed lights featuring man-woman, man-man and woman-woman couples in red and green before the Eurovision Song Contest will take place in the city.

The Austrian capital has come up with a new idea to call the pedestrians’ attention to the traffic lights a little more. Few of the cities had already installed ladies sign pedestrian signs to remove gender differences. Vienna however decided to make the lights more interesting by giving it a more romantic touch.

The Viennese pedestrian lights will feature straight, gay and lesbian couples, holding hands while they ‘stop’ and ‘go’. The couples all have romantic hearts on them and it looks cute to see the red and green lights couples around different corners.

The 33rd municipal department representative Sonya Vicht explained to Reuters that the purpose of the lights design was to see the compliance of people with the traffic lights to improve road safety. She said that by generalizing the sexual orientation in something as common as lights, the intent is that people will notice them more and become acceptable of the homosexuality around them.

The lights caught attention for a whole other theme though. Vienna is about to host this year’s Eurovision Song Contest which was won by Austria’s “bearded lady”, Conchita Wurst. It was an ultimate acceptance at the part of the general public for homosexuality in general. The appearance of lights just before the contest has highlighted the contest’s purpose to be sexually accepting.

Some are also saying that the lights are to create open mindedness among citizens for gay and lesbian couples. The city will also be hosting the Life Ball. Life Ball is an annual charity event to raise money for HIV and AIDS.

The event will be attended by Charlize Theron, Conchita Wurst and French fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier. The city is definitely very accepting of the homosexual couples and whatever their intent might be explained as, the gay and lesbian couples are happy for the recognition as they head out to this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.
