Wimbledon Bans Selfie Sticks

Selfie Sticks start to have the same fate as the Google Glass.

Apple banned Selfie Sticks from their upcoming developer conference (WWDC 2015) and now organizers of the most famous Tennis tournament also ban them. Selfie Stick face the same fate as Google Glass. More and more places are banning the sticks that help make wider selfies.

This year visitors to the Wimbledon Tennis tournament are not allowed to bring Selfie Sticks. The sticks are on the same level as knifes and other sharp objects as can be seen on the image of prohibited items below.

CNN reports that the organizers decided to ban Selfie Stick as they are a nuisance and they interfere with spectators’ enjoyment. So forget about getting a photo of your face with Maria Sharapova playing in the background.

Wimbledon 2015 will be held a week later than in the past. The new schedule extends the period between Roland Garros and Wimbledon to three weeks, allowing the players more time for rest and recuperation. Wimbledon 2015 starts on June 29 and ends on July 12.

The 2015 Wimbledon total prize money is £26.75m (~$40.7m), an increase of £1.75m (7%) over 2014. The Gentlemen’s and Ladies’ Singles Champions will each receive £1.88m (~$2.88), a 7% increase from £1.76m in 2014. Tennis has apparently no gender equality issues.

In the last four years the total prize money has increased from £14.6m in 2011 to £26.75m in 2015, with the singles winners’ prize money increasing from £1.1m to £1.88m.
