- Transplant of Ovarian Tissue Thtat was Frozen a Decade Ago Leads to Baby’s Birth
Frozen ovarian tissue transplant led to a baby’s birth in case of a woman who had the ovarian tissue frozen at the age of 13.
The process was a success. It appears to be the case that postmenopausal women can now get transplants of ovarian tissue instead of turning to hormone replacement therapy. The woman hails from Belgium and her identity has not been divulged. She had an ovary removed at the age of 13 due to a bone marrow transplant that left her unable to have children.
Physicians were unsure whether the prepubescent girl’s ovary would be viable later on. But ten years since that fateful day when doctors transplanted the tissue back into her single ovary, it seemed to be a procedure like grafting.
A few months afterwards her periods started and two years later she was heavy with child. Soon she conceived a baby. This was a modern day miracle. Thus the lesson to be taken from this is that women whose ovaries get vanquished during treatment ought to have parts of them frozen so that later on they could be transplanted with success.
Woman gave birth to a boy weighing 6lbs 9oz in November 2014, according to Sky News. Dr Isabelle Demeestere, a fertility specialist at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles, Brussels, said: “This is an important breakthrough.
“When (children) are diagnosed with diseases that require treatment that can destroy ovarian function, freezing ovarian tissue is the only available option for preserving their fertility.”
It is the only methodology of preserving fertility at a late stage after all hope is gone. Various doubts had been voiced before regarding the whole shebang. But when it was found to actually work in real life, the stage was set for such procedures to be a commonplace scenario in the future.
As yet, though there are very few places in the world where such technology exists that could cause fertility in a barren woman. But with time and patience it could become a very banal and routine act that anyone could avail. The only thing that medical science knows is that it knows nothing yet since the future advancements are so thrilling in their sheer magnificence.
