Sifting through some clues in the OSX code from Apple’s WWDC reveals more pointers towards an update to the iMac desktop computers with increased screen resolution.
You might recall that in the latest version of Mavericks code there were pointers towards the graphics cards being supported that gave credence to a lower-specced iMac with an integrated CPU/GPU. With no hardware announced at WWDC for any line, that pointer is still out there, waiting to be used.
Now it’s time for another pointer, this time in OSX Yosemite. The developer preview builds all support iMac resolutions that point to 4K monitors at a resolution that falls under the ‘retina’ description. Various levels of screen size are being supported, reports Macbidouille, with the higher resolutions covering resolutions of 4096 x 2304, 5760 x 3240, and 6400 x 3600. The version numbers of these devices in the code point to the 15.1 iMac series – the current iMacs are versioned at 14.1.
It’s pretty much a given that there will be a new iPhone and iPad in the Fall as part of Apple’s regular product refresh. Even though the MacBook Air has picked up a recent update, this was little more than a ‘keeping up the specs‘ update as opposed to something fundamental new or different. Both the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro are due a refresh.
It’s time to include the iMac range in the expectations for the Fall season as well.
WWDC has given us some glimpses of what to expect from a new range of Apple products across all their product lines. Again I come back to Eddy Cue’s ‘best product pipeline in 25 years’, a statement which has been a masterclass of PR and has served to magnify the appeal of Apple in the last week without actually confirming anything.
