Zendaya wrote a message on Instagram in response to E!’s ‘Fashion Police’ host Giuliana Rancic’s rude remarks about her hairstyle on the Oscars red carpet.
It is a great night when the stars descend on the red carpet for the Oscars and everyone has an eye on what the best of the best are wearing for the big night. Looking good, many trends are set on the red carpet, the year’s fashion trends are set and individuality speaks with threads on their backs.
Zendaya took the red carpet on with a pearly white outfit complimented with neatly arranged dreadlocks. She looked as stunning as an 18 years old young woman could be expected to look. Guiliana Rancic thought so as well when she talked to Zendaya on the red carpet. As soon as Guiliana came on air the E!, she slammed Zendaya’s hairstyle. She said that Zendaya smelled of “patchouli oil… or weed” based on Zendaya’s look.
Zendaya responded to Rancic’s comments about her hair. She posted a long message on Instagram and twitter in which she said that she has been a victim of ignorant slurs and pure disrespect. She was talking about Rancic’s comments.
Zendaya said that she rarely responded to any negative comments but Rancic’s comments were racial and stereotypical. She said that if an 18 years old woman walks out supporting a specific hairstyle does not mean that she has to be doing drugs.
Similarly her hairstyle should not have been a point of any kind of negative comments. Her hairstyle was a statement of a heritage and tradition. Much of the people close to her have locks and she appreciates the tradition behind them.
She enlisted a variety of accomplished people including Selma’s director Ava DuVernay, Grammy nominated star Ledisi, Professor Vincent Brown and historian Heather Andrea Williams that had locks. So to comment on a hairstyle that was already a target of so much negativity in the country was a very disrespectful thing to do to her and the people that had the hairstyle.
Guiliana Rancic responded to Zendaya’s response by apologizing to her on Twitter saying that she didn’t comment on her hairstyle with racial implications and she never will. Zendaya will surely take that apology but she and her fans cannot get over the duplicity of Rancic, Her fans are supporting Zendaya’s statement and they are all with her on Instagram and Twitter.
