1 Million Apple Watch Orders in first 24 Hours estimated by Analyst

A new analyst report says that consumers ordered close to 1 million Apple Watches on Friday in the United States alone.

The Apple Watch went up for pre-order on Friday. Shipping time frames slipped within hours to June on most Apple Watch models. This already indicated that sales numbers would be high. Slice Intelligence issued a report saying that 957,000 people in the United States ordered an Apple Watch on Friday.

According to analyst e-receipt data from 9,080 online shoppers, each Apple Watch buyer ordered an average of 1.3 watches, spending $503.83 per watch. Those ordering an Apple Watch Sport spent $382.83 per watch and those ordering the Apple Watch spent $707.04.

According to the data 62% ordered an Apple Watch Sport. This number is also reflected by survey data from several Apple blogs. Most consumers went for the larger 42mm model. Specifically 71% bought a 42mm Apple Watch.

As expected, the most popular case color is the Space Gray (aluminum case), with 40% of Apple Watch buyers choosing the option, followed by: stainless steel at 34%, silver aluminum at 23% and finally Space Black stainless steel at 3%. Incidentally Space Gray was trending on Twitter on Friday, April 10 for several hours after the pre-order launch.

Also to no surprise is that the black sports band is the most popular with 64%.

Slice Intelligence data is based on a panel of more than 2 million online shoppers, Slice Intelligence offers the most detailed and precise digital commerce data available, reported daily.

We expect more analyst reports about Apple Watch sales to be released, but likely Apple will not disclose any numbers. The Apple Q2 earnings call is next week on Monday. April 27, which would give Apple an opportunity to talk about Apple Watch sales. The question is if Tim Cook will reveal specific numbers.

Apple Watch introduces a new design and iOS-based user interface created specifically for a smaller device. Apple Watch features the Digital Crown, a new way to scroll, zoom and navigate fluidly, without obstructing the display. The Digital Crown also serves as the Home button and a quick way to access Siri. The Retina display on Apple Watch features Force Touch, a technology that senses the difference between a tap and a press, providing a new way to access controls within Apple Watch apps.

The Apple Watch introduces the Taptic Engine and a built-in speaker that together discreetly enable an entirely new vocabulary of alerts and notifications you can both hear and feel. Apple custom-designed its own S1 SiP (System in Package) to miniaturize an entire computer architecture onto a single chip. Apple Watch also features Wi-Fi 802.11b/g and Bluetooth 4.0 to pair seamlessly with your iPhone. Besides the smart watch features the Apple Watch keeps time to within 50 milliseconds of UTC, the universal time standard when synching regularly with the iPhone.

The Apple Watch starts at $349 for the small case (38mm) Sport Edition. The Apple Watch Pre-order started on April 10 at 12:01am PDT in 9 countries (Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, the UK and the US) and the Apple Watch ships on April 24.
