Apple Incorporated has been said to have surreptitiously acquired “Pandora For Books” startup BookLamp in order to rival the giant Amazon. However, Apple has confirmed the acquisition later on.
Apple Acquired BookLamp to Rival Amazon
Earlier reports inform us regarding Apple Incorporated’s ploy to harm its contender Amazon. The execs at Apple seem to have had the horse sense to buy up BookLamp and thus fight an open battle with Amazon on its own grounds.
TechCrunch first reported that “Apple has made another acquisition, one that it is using to boost its e-books effort and “beat Amazon at its own game.” It has bought BookLamp.”
However, Apple later on confirmed this acquisition report. “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans,” tech giant said in a statement.
BookLamp is an Idahoan setup that deals in book analytic amenities. By now the merger has been finalized and there is no turning back. As for the message from the administration of Apple, it is simple enough.
They prefer to purchase small-time companies and would not like to reveal any more details regarding their plans or future directions. The price paid by the late Steve Jobs’ brainchild is somewhere between $10 million and $15 million for BookLamp.
The most exciting thing about BookLamp and for which it is most renowned is its Book Genome Project. This allows related subject books to be found after you have found the one you want. It is bibliotherapy at its best.
With a little helping hand from BookLamp, Apple’s iBooks could very well take off into the stratosphere thereby giving Jeff Bezos’ Amazon a run for its money.
Apple likes to keep things under wraps till the last moment. Nevertheless this piece of news got leaked and now everybody knows about it.
But the CEO of BookLamp is also toeing the line with the bigger company which has engulfed his enterprise. He gave no reply to queries about the merger. Mum’s the word!
Before it got picked up by Apple, BookLamp had raised funds amounting to almost a million dollars. And it appears to be the case that once upon a time it even was about to be bagged by Amazon but somehow things didn’t work out between the two.
It seems that Amazon acquired GoodReads instead and thus Apple was the beneficiary of BookLamp. BookLamp graphically illustrates the popularity and trends for a book such as Stephen King’s horror genre hit novel “Carrie” or E.L. James’ sex-capade and BDSM series “Fifty Shades of Grey”. The platform is for book lovers and intellectuals who like to embark on a journey of ideas that never ends.
