Mazda releases limited details
The 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata is finally out from under the covers but unfortunately there aren’t many details in store for us this time. The new Miata will be welcomed as the latest generation of the best-selling two-seat roadster of all time which has been sold over 940,000 sold worldwide since 1989.
The car still sports the typical Miata look and can be recognized in an instant however there were some changes expected to come with the new model and this one features new “Kodo” design language which gives it the sculpted bodywork, sharp edges, trim headlights and a five-sided grille. The car sports a lower hood which houses the four-cylinder engine mounted behind the front axle. This helps in providing a near perfect 50/50 weight distribution.
There has been no comment on the motor so far and no details given on how large or powerful this is going to be. The exact weight of the car has also been kept a secret and we have only been told that it is going to weigh 20 pounds lighter than the current model, which would put it at no more than 2260 pounds. If our assumptions are anywhere near the truth then this car can be the lightest of the cars sold in the US. Much of the weight of the car has been trimmed down by the aluminum bodywork and a new soft top design.
We still need a confirmation regarding whether a retractable hardtop model will continue to be available and the best part about the weight reduction is that the size of the cabin has not been affected at all. Apart from this, the MX-5 Miata is going to bring six speed manual and automatic transmission options which are going to send power to the rear wheels. Pedals and other controls have been placed in such a way that they provide the maximum comfort and also enhance performance.
If there would be any controversy in any of the things of the Mazda Miata then it would be the rear end since that has a lot of taper to it. You can actually feel that there is some scaled-down Jaguar F-Type in the way it curves inward. Also add the taillamp forms to this list. Mazda itself has revealed that the car is lower and it seems as if it comfortable sits on the wheels and snuggles closely to them. However, Tom Matano, one of the fathers of the original Miata said “See, this is a design model… ‘design height’ means fully loaded with gas and one person. So it’s not necessarily like a production car sitting in a parking lot.”
There would however be no controversies in the interior of the car since that area has received a lot of improvement in not just the material choice but also the overall aesthetics. If there was anything that needed improvement in the overall Mazda design then it was the interior of the cabin and now with its improvement everything is back to perfect.
