LG to unveil ColorPrime brand range at CES 2015

LG will reveal its 2015 lineup of 4K LCD TVs, including the models with Quantum Dot and others with Wide Color LED technology

LG’s 2015 lineup of 4K LCD TVs, including the models with Quantum Dot and others with Wide Color LED technology, is happily going to flaunt ColorPrime branding showing that it’s time for us to move one step ahead from the Quantum Dot technology. LG has decided to add another tool for color-related TV enhancement and it seems quite amazing to say the least.

The Quantum Dot TV has already been announced by LG ahead of rival Samsung at CES 2015 and now it has even teased its entire lineup of 4K LED LCD TVs which highlights the new “ColorPrime” technology. The name Optimus Prime had already been taken so perhaps this was the best LG could do at branding the new technology. But it is not just the name that confuses us but also the fact that the brand also includes QD TV along with some other TVs with “Wide Color LED technology.”

It is being reported that this “utilizes different phosphor-based LEDs to display greater color depth and more lifelike images and a 25 percent increase in color gamut” while the quantum dots realize a 30 percent increase in color gamut. It is important to note here that wider color gamuts require new color specs like DCI or Rec 2023, and it is not just hard but seemingly impossible to find video content which sticks to these specs in today’s world. And whether they feature the Quantum dots or not, they are still LCDs and we can expect to get the quality of plasma out of them, let alone OLED.

There was no mention of OLED by LG in today’s announcement but we can expect the company to unveil some new OLED TVs at the CES. Moving on, the 2015 4K lineup is going to be comprised of nine series of LED LCD TVs.
