Lenny Kravitz Is Katy Perry’s Special Guest for Super Bowl 2015 Halftime Show

Rock n’ roll legend Lenny Kravitz has been tapped to perform alongside Katy Perry for the Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show in Glendale, Az. on Feb. 1.

According to a Jan. 11 press release on the NFL’s official website, international performing artist Katy Perry invited Kravitz to join her for the much-anticipated performance. Perry broke the news during an exclusive interview with Willie Geist during NBC’s telecast of the AFC Divisional Round game pitting the New England Patriots against the Baltimore Ravens on Jan. 10. NBC’s “The Today Show” will air the interview on Monday, Jan. 12. 

Rolling Stone Magazine’s Daniel Kreps documented Geist’s interview with Perry:

“‘My first special guest is going to be an incredible rock & roll icon, a guitar god,’ Perry said before announcing Kravitz to NBC’s Willie Geist in an interview set to air Monday on The Today Show, ‘He’s the coolest!’ Following the Super Bowl, Kravitz will go back on the road for the international leg of his tour in support of his 2014 album Strut, one of Rolling Stone’s 50 Best Albums of 2014. 

“When asked whether this means fans can expect the duo to perform ‘American Woman,’ Kravitz’s Grammy-winning cover of the Guess Who single, Perry quipped, ‘We’ll see.'”

Perry’s “first special guest” comment could very well be a possible teaser which indicates several more big-name musical talents will be on tap for the Super Bowl Halftime Show next month. Bruno Mars shared the stage with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers last year while Britney Spears, Aerosmith, ‘N Sync, Mary J. Blige and Nelly all performed during Super Bowl XLV in Tampa Bay, Fl, per Entertainment Weekly’s Jeff Labrecque.  

Kravitz, highly regarded as one of the most influential musicians around, “has transcended genre, style, race and class into a 20-year musical career, one which revels in the rich influences of of ’60s and ’70s soul, rock and funk,” per NFL.com. He won four straight Grammy Awards and has won the most “Best Male Rock Vocal Performance” recognitions. 

His most recent albums include the 20th anniversary rendition of his first hit, “Let Love Rule” and his latest studio release, “Strut.” He will continue to mesmerize worldwide audiences after his Super Bowl performance in February — the second leg of the “Strut” world tour will commence on March 14 at Tokyo’s International Forum. From there, he will go to other parts of Asia, Australia, the United States and Europe, per NFL.com.

As for Perry, she has been maintaining her status as one of the most popular female musical sensations today. Among her most famous hits include “I Kissed A Girl,” “Hot N’ Cold,” “Thinking of You,” “Waking Up In Vegas,” “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Firework,” “E.T.” and “Last Friday Night,” per NFL.com. 

The NFL’s official press release says Perry’s song “Roar” became “Katy’s 10th No. 1 Top 40 track after debuting at No. 1 on iTunes in 668 countries with 557,024 downloads in its first week of release, the biggest digital song sales week of 2013.” Perry’s song “Dark Horse” also spent an incredible 46 weeks at No. 1 in Billboard Magazine’s airplay charts archives. Mediabase has bestowed her with the honor as the No. 1 artist on Top 40, Hot AC and AC. 

Perry also made history by surpassing 75 million downloads — both digital and on-demand streams, per NFL.com. Her Prismatic World Tour has sold out more than 100 arenas across the globe to date. It will continue in 2015 with stops in Europe, Asia and South America.

The Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show is the most popular musical extravaganza of the year. More than 115 million people tuned in to last year’s Super Bowl matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos, according to NFL.com. Roughly the same number is expected for this year’s edition of the big game. Industry giant Pepsi, which is in its third year as title sponsor of the Super Bowl Halftime show, continues its thrust on its “Hyped for Haltime” campaign with the Perry and Kravitz performance.
