  • Mexico will take on an active part in Super Bowl XLIX.
  • Mexico is Arizona’s biggest trading partner.
  • It is also the NFL’s second-biggest fan base.

Mexico, Arizona’s No. 1 trading partner and the second-biggest NFL fan base, has been invited to take an active part in the upcoming Super Bowl XLIX in Glendale.

Super Bowl XLIX is going international.

According to 12 News‘ Katey Rusch (via AZCentral.com), the Super Bowl Host Committee is “inviting thousands from Mexico to cross the border to celebrate and even sponsor Super Bowl XLIX festivities.” It’s an endeavor meant to improve relations between the committee and Mexico.

In addition, the committee was able to get a sponsorship from the Mexican government. It went to Mexico in order to do so, per Rusch.

Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee David Farca explained to Rush why Mexico was high on its list. He said,”A third of our population is Hispanic so we really wanted to make a Super Bowl that was inclusive of everybody.”

On the committee going to Mexico, Farca quipped,”It’s another first for Super Bowl and we’re really excited about that.”

Farca and Co. are so serious in getting Mexico involved, they even closed off a street in Glendale’s downtown Super Bowl Central to promote tourism in the country. What’s more is the Super Bowl’s websites, ads and marketing tools have Spanish versions, Rusch stresses.

Rusch says the reasons why Mexico stands out is “it’s Arizona’s No. 1 trading partner and it’s home to the NFL‘s second-biggest fan base.”

In another development, local Phoenix-area students have teamed up with the National Football League (NFL), the Arizona Cardinals, Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee, Verizon and the Salvation Army South Mountain Kroc Community Center for an undertaking called “Super Kids-Super Sharing.” Schools in Scottsdale, Chandler, Tempe, Gilbert, Tolleson, Mesa, Goodyear, Avondale, Queen Creek and Litchfield Park are also participating.

An official press release from the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee explains how it all began:

“This grassroots community project started in local homes earlier this month as students and families gathered up lightly used (or new) books, school supplies and sports equipment to donate. Those items are being collected at participating public and private schools.”

The NFL has been promoting the Super Kids-Super Sharing project in each Super Bowl host city since 2000. “Since it’s inception in 2000 at Super Bowl XXXIV in Atlanta, the Super Kids-Super Sharing project has placed hundreds of thousands of books and pieces of sports equipment into the hands of children in Super Bowl Host communities,” per the official press release.

This project is also part of the league’s Environmental Program. Kids learn the value of recycling used items which can still be used for the benefit of the less fortunate. The Super Kids-Super Sharing also promotes NFL Play 60 because sports equipment is shared among youngsters. NFL Play 60 is the league’s health and wellness campaign for children.
