- Netflix scores the rights to stream The Interview starting this Saturday for US and UK viewers.
Netflix released its financial report highlighting the statistics for last year and the next year plans that included the start of premieres with the premiere of The Interview for its viewers,
The story of The Interview is perhaps going to be written in the annals of history. The James Franco and Seth Rogen starrer comedy in which they played two disgruntled journalists who are tasked by the CIA to assassinate Kim Jong-un.
The Koreans took offence to the movie’s plot which resulted in a major hack of the production company of the movie, Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE). The cyber attack led to worldwide controversy and the theatres refused to showcase the movie.
This led to an online release of the movie on Google, YouTube and Microsoft video streaming services. Torrent also played a significant role in helping the movie earn $40 million.
Only selective theatres premiered the movie so it was a neither win nor loss situation. The movie was anticipated to make a lot more but given the circumstances, it earned a lot more since the company even decided once to shut down the movie entirely.
So where is the movie headed now? Its Blu-ray version is set to hit the markets on February 17th. Netflix has other plans however regarding the movie, taking into account the popularity the movie has received; Netflix takes the next big step in progressing as the top notch network.
After issuing its financial report, Netflix announced that they have sat down with the CEO of SPE and bought the rights to stream the movie for all its US and UK viewers. The movie will also be available to other European viewers using VPN. The movie is set to premiere on 24th January which is a month later than its release in theaters and pay-per-view and a month earlier than it came out on Blu-ray.
Netflix also announced that its first original feature film, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II: The Green Destiny, will also debut on August 26 in all of our markets. And Netflix will also release this film on select IMAX screens on the same day.
Netflix is also going to increase the number of hours of original programming by three times this year as compared to previous hours. Netflix will launch a total of 320 hours of original series including both new and returning, stand-up comedy specials, documentaries and films.
