The Seattle Seahawks’ defense does not intimidate New England Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount.
According to ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss, Blount is fully aware of Seattle’s top-ranked defense, which allowed an average of just 15.9 points per game during the regular season. During Super Bowl XLIX Media Day, Blount says he’s not bothered by it and that the playing field between his Patriots and the Seahawks is equal:
“I don’t care about them being the top defense, that doesn’t bother me. They were good enough to get here, just like we were good enough to get here. They’re not immortal. They can be beaten.”
Blount has his work cut out for him.
Reiss stresses the Seahawks’ defense has made it tough on opposing running backs to get their game going — their rushing defense ranked third in the league this season, allowing just 81.5 yards per game on the ground.
Despite this fact, Blount told reporters he’s confident the Patriots will be able to devise a plan to thwart Seattle’s vaunted defense, per ESPN Boston:
“Obviously they’re a pretty good defense. They were good enough to get here, they were good enough to get here last year, so we are going to put a plan together to hopefully make sure we come out victorious.”
For good measure, Blount also reminded people of how good he can be, per ESPN’s Terry Blount:

In another related development, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is not afraid to let his quarterback, Tom Brady, throw in Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman’s direction during Super Bowl XLIX, per NFL.com’s Dan Hanzus. Sherman has held opposing quarterbacks to an 18.1 passer rating during his postseason career.
McDaniels told Hanzus he is impressed with Sherman’s intelligence, but the Patriots are still going to take their chances on him come game time:
“We’ve got to do a great job at the line of scrimmage. This guy is long, fast and very disruptive at the line…He’s a very intelligent player who understands schemes and route concepts…very much like (Patriots cornerback Darrelle) Revis. Darrelle will do some of that, too, in practice against us, where you’ll go, ‘How the heck did he know that was part of (the play)? He sees more than just his guy.’
“It’s not an easy thing to avoid him the whole game. We’re going to try not to do that with anybody. We got to go wherever the ball needs to go in the passing game. But I think you need to be more sensitive to him and where he’s at. He’s a great player.”
