Wonder Woman’s set to join the world of Man in Fall 2015

Recent reports place Gal Gadot to begin filming Wonder Woman in the fall. While little information is available, Michelle MacLaren and Jason Fuchs are set to direct and pen the screenplay.

In a Deadline report on a story about Gal Gadot’s latest casting in Fox 2000’s “Keeping Up with the Joneses,” news spilled that “Wonder Woman” is set to film this fall. And in the box office battle between DC Entertainment and Marvel, “Wonder Woman” will be the first superheroine movie to hit the big screen in 2017 since “Captain Marvel” isn’t set to appear until 2018.

Warner Bros. hasn’t officially confirmed the schedule, but Slashflim reports that Michelle MacLaren’s directing a script written by Jason Fuchs. Gadot’s costume was revealed at Comic Con last year, leading to a lot of rumors and speculation on what to expect.

MacLaren’s filmography includes “Breaking Bad”, “The Walking Dead”, “Game of Thrones”, and the first episode of ratings-breaker “Better Call Saul”, so she definitely could understand the gritty world of the DC Movie Universe (DCMU). Perhaps the idea is a teaser into what Wonder Woman’s world looks and feels like. Fuchs is known for “Ice Age: Continental Drift” (2012) and “Pan” (2015). The team up seems unusual, but perhaps Warner Bros. is looking to create a world set for a woman out of time in a modern age.

In the October 2014 rumor, three films would build up alter ego Diana Prince’s introduction into the world of Man during the 1920s, the lead up and fighting of World War II, and then the modern age with the latest “Justice League.” One interesting note is the fact the Bleeding Cool noted is that first half of the origin movie is set in the 1920s would involve Amazons vying for control and power—something usually only seen in male-dominated features.

However, looking at the filming and release schedule, it seems unlikely that DC Entertainment would give that much attention to Wonder Woman when the company is pushing for more Batman and Superman, the most well-known male characters.

Rumors began the moment casting and film was announced. At last year’s convention, it was confirmed “Batman v Superman” would be released March 25, 2016, which Gadot stars in as Wonder Woman. Then on June 23, 2017, Wonder Woman tries to bring truth and justice to mankind, which later helps set up the first “Justice League” movie on November 10, 2018. And earlier this week, Zack Snyder released a photo of Jason Momoa as Aquaman, a founder of the League and a hero who will get his own story the same year as the “League” movie.

Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment are looking to set up a comparable product against Marvel’s Avengers, but the timing /4/put the company behind since Marvel released Iron Man starring Robert Downey, Jr. back in /4/2008.

An interview with IGN, David S. Goyer (DCMU) implied that Warner Bros. was looking to create a multiverse instead of a single universe, but what that means to on screen timelines is questionable. The first of the series was 2013’s “Man of Steel” with Henry Cavill as Superman, making the feature more of an origin story and less of an obvious reboot. Unlike the Batman character, played by Ben Affleck.

With over another full year to wait until the first available scenes on the big screen of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, speculation will mount. Last fall in a “Hollywood Reporter” series, producer Charles Roven announced Wonder Woman would be the daughter of Zeus, a demigod.

Speaking about the “Batman v Superman” project, he offered the reasoning for her immense strength and power. “Wonder Woman is in it, we know that. She has powers, she’s a goddess, right? She’s a half – she is a demigod. Her father was Zeus.”

The pronouncement was met with reservations. A woman made out of clay was somewhat suspect, but a baby sent through outer space to be raised as an all-around Midwestern boy wasn’t problematic in the least. Wonder Woman’s origin story involved a life without Man, thus making the transition into the world of humankind more jarring. DC and Warner Bros. seem to following The New 52’s timelines and plots for Wondy.

So how will Fuchs handle the latest hiccup in her storyline?

Rumors for “Wonder Woman” also included an origin story hinted or explained at during “Batman v. Superman.” If following the schedule pattern, it seems likely that only a hint will be supplied by DC Entertainment in order to heighten interest in the solo film.

DC Entertainment is already building a number of small screen brands, so it’s easy to reason that the connected “Justice League” films will get even more attention. Staying silent has helped fuel the interest, so it’s doubtful they’d lose that kind of build up by giving all of Wonder Woman’s secrets away in next summer’s “Batman v Superman” release.

In other words, expect small reveals until 2017.
