Academy Awards: Complete List of Oscars 2015 Winners

The 2015 Oscars took place Sunday night and was an affair of A-list celebrities, jokes, surprising wins, a few disappointments and some musical numbers.

The 87th Academy Award ceremony took in more than three and a half hours of broadcast time and was staged at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, California. Like every other prominent award ceremony the pre-show or simply addressed as the red carpet arrivals was a force in itself providing a glimpse of attendees and an ample prologue of the main event. 

While gracing the red pathway some stars channelled the best of their Hollywood glamour while some sizzled and few simply did not even hit the mark of well dressed. The H-town ladies spared seemed to have spared no expense for the ceremony, however only a few made the best dressed list. Jennifer Aniston was all smiles in a nude Versace gown, while Zoe Saldana and J.Lo also opted for gowns with nude hues from Versace and Elie Saab respectively, with their own twists. Rosamund Pike and Dakota Johnson wowed in a red Givenchy and Saint Laurent gowns respectively, while Emma stone graced an Elie Saab lime green creation. Some ladies failed to impress such as Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard and Naomi Watts with huge fashion fails.

The men of Oscars put up their own display with Freddie Redmayne looking dapper in a blue Alexander McQueen blue tux, with Ansel Elgort following in the blue tux trend with a creation from Prada, while Channing Tatum looked super chic when he wore a classic black tux by Dolce & Gabbana. 

The first time host Neil Patrick Harris opened the Oscars 2015 in the most epic way imaginable with a musical number entitled ‘Moving Pictures’ that paid tribute to the magic found in movies in the cutest and funniest way possible. The song is written by the duo Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez the Oscar winning ‘Frozen’ duo. Harris took the stage to perform the song with a bevy of great moments and magic (Literally magic tricks). Some of the best memorable moments were when Anna Kendrick, sans full ‘Into the Woods’ ensemble, joined Harris on stage to sing alongside him about happy ending in movies… with the hilarious lyrics aimed at Harris: ‘Except in Gone Girl when that lady slit your throat!’ 

Jack Black crashed the song in an act to point out all the negative points of Hollywood in rant, but was ushered away when Kendrick threw her shoe at the rocker and told him to beat it! Other amazing moments of the song were when Harris sang he secretly hopes someone pulls a Kanye West and pointedly looked at Clint Eastwood, with the best line of the song being ‘Magic Meryl Effin’ Streep’ and Jonathan Cumberbatch drinking from a flask and mouthing Go Away’ while Harris sang about no one being drunk yet.

Neil Patrick Harris went on to deliver several comedy gems throughout the Oscars ceremony after his opening monologue. Harris’ first joke of the night was a dig at the racial controversy in Hollywood, when purposefully misspoke ‘whitest’ instead of the ‘brightest’ when honoring the best of Hollywood and unabashedly made a false apology. Harris admitted some of the nominated movie titles confused him this years, as ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’ implies the first installment was insufficient at training dragons. Harris then introduced Reese Witherspoon as being so lovely you could eat her up with her spoon. When it came time to present Dakota Johnson, Harris announced to the viewer’s she’s not just the actress of the February 2015 blockbuster but the reason people have to explain spanking benches to their grandmothers.

The most epic moment of Harris hosting the Oscars came when he stripped down to his white underwear in imitation of the Oscar nominated movie ‘Birdman’. Harris sauntered only in his white undies both backstage and on the main stage. Backstage Harris interrupted the drumming solo of Miles Teller and then made his way to the audience, and while onstage just he proclaimed ‘Acting is a noble profession’.

As for the Oscar itself ‘Birdman’ was the principal winner of the award ceremony and snagged a total of four trophies. The ‘Birdman’ took home four Academy Awards with one of the night’s biggest categories such as ‘Best Picture’, ‘Best Director’ to Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, ‘Original Screenplay’ to Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Nicolas Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris Jr, and Armando Bo, and lastly Best Cinematography’ to Emmanuel Lubezki.

To the disappointment of fans and critics the much favored film ‘Boyhood’ on the other hand only succeeded in securing one award. Patricia Arquette won the ‘Best Supporting Actress Award’ for her character as a divorced single mother in ‘Boyhood’.

The ‘Best Actor’ category was won by Freddie Redmayne for his portrayal of the physicist Steven Hawking, who calculated the theory of relativity, in the film ‘The Theory of Everything’. The 33 years old British actor Redmayne beat Michael Keaton for the award and while accepting the award onstage gave a delightful speech. Redmayne profusely thanked everyone and declared he cannot even explain how he feels right now and then he thanked Steven Hawking and stated the award belonged to everyone around the world suffering ALS. Lastly he thanked his wife Hannah and declared his love for her and informed everyone they were expecting an addition to the family. The film ‘The Theory of Everything’ is about Hawking as a young astrophysics student at the University of Cambridge and follows his life as he develops the theory of relativity, falls in love and experiences the loss of bodily control due to ALS.  

Julianne Moore the four time nominated actress finally won the award for ‘Best Actress’ for her portrayal as an Alzheimer sufferer in the film ‘Still Alice’. While accepting the award Moore related how when her husband saw the film he told her she will win an Oscar but Moore did not believe him. Moore further explained she considered herself lucky for getting such a part but she never imagined winning. The 54 year old Moore portrayed the titular character of Alice a linguistic professor who is diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s and how her life is affected by the condition, based upon the best-selling novel by Lisa Genova.

Although the Academy Awards are all about the Winners and the Losers… a multitude of performances by musical artists is also a tradition of the star studded night. Adam Levine, Rita Ora, Jennifer Hudson and Tim McGraw were one of the few entertainers of the night and adequately showed off their musical talents. However the show was stolen by by Gaga and her commanding voice when she performed ‘The Sound of Music’ for its 50th anniversary and blew the roof off with the force of her voice. The performance earned her a standing ovation and a long hug from Julie Andrews.

Another highlight of the night was the collaboration between John Legend and the rapper Common, as the duo gave a chilling performance of the song ‘Glory’ from the film ‘Selma’. The music was so powerful and full of the emotional message of the film, it brought tears to many eyes in the audience and few minutes of the song ‘Glory’ has secured its place in the Academy Award history.
