Google presents plan to extend headquarters at Silicon Valley

The new construction will have movable blocks under translucent canopies

Google has revealed its plans to expand its headquarters at the Silicon Valley city where it is based already. The plans were submitted on Friday and includes presentations of movable structures which are going to be constructed under curving and translucent canopies. The company’s headquarters are based in Mountain View, California, which were established 15 years ago and the plans have been presented to the City Council. Officials are saying this is going to be a long review process and the presentation of the plans was the first step towards this development.

The construction of the new headquarters are going to give the company enough room for an additional 10,000 employees and 20,000 employees are already working in the city. The design of the construction is being called architecturally innovative and can be viewed in the blueprint. The blueprint for new headquarters in the city’s North Bayshore district has gained particular attention because of its innovative design.

The plan for the extension in San Francisco Bay Area is strictly being taken care of because the technology industry’s high salaries have been increasing the housing prices which are not affordable by most of the families.

David Radcliffe, Google’s vice president of real estate, took to the company’s blog post and said “Today we’re submitting a plan to redevelop four sites – places where we already have offices but hope to significantly increase our square footage – to the Mountain View City Council.”

The block like structures will be capable of moving around and will ultimately create space for different teams who are working on different projects. With these projects, an additional 2.5 million square feet of space is going to be added to the existing campus. The masterminds behind the design are architect Bjarke Ingels of the firm Bjarke Ingels Group and Thomas Heatherwick of architecture and design company Heatherwick Studio.

Also, the construction of clear canopies over the buildings is going to filter light into the campus which is going to make room for trees, grass and bicycle paths in different parts of the campus. “They’re very ambitious,” Mountain View City Councilman Ken Rosenberg said of the blueprints. “They’re taking what we know about building design and significantly advancing the concept.”
