Microsoft Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL Announced at MWC 2015

Microsoft tries to make a run for more mobile operating system share with two new affordable Lumia smartphones.

Microsoft has a hard time to grow the market share for Windows in the mobile space. Today Microsoft unveiled two new Lumia phones that start under $160. The new Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL will be upgradable to Windows 10 and go on sale later this year.

The Microsoft Lumia 640 has a 8MP camera including a front-facing camera for Skype, a long-lasting battery and fast LTE connectivity. The Lumia 640 and 640 XL come with integrated Microsoft Office services with 30GB of cloud storage on OneDrive. The Lumia 640 is priced at 159 euros ($178) for LTE and 139 euros ($156) for 3G/Dual SIM before taxes and subsidies.

And for those who want more, the Lumia 640 XL is our super-sized version. At 5.7 inches, it has a larger screen along with a bigger battery and features a 13-megapixel camera and Carl Zeiss optics. Still it’s a great price at 219 euros ($245) for LTE and 189 euros ($211) for 3G/Dual SIM before taxes and subsidies.

Both new Lumia smartphones come with a one-year personal subscription to Office365, enabling the full Office experience on the Lumia as well as one tablet and one PC/Mac. The subscription also include 1TB of storage on OneDrive.

The pricing on the new Lumia smartphones is aggressive. This could win over customers who have been using Android or iOS devices. Windows 10 is supposed to be the big milestone that will boost Lumia sales. With Windows 10 all devices consumers own will have the same operating system.
