engines for North America at its Cleveland Engine Plant in Ohio. It is the first time that Ford will build these engines in the U.S. Bruce Hettle the vice president of Ford for North America Manufacturing stated that as EcoBoost powered vehicles on the road increase by the day, Cleveland Engine has been at the forefront of the company’s plan. This he stated is in order to provide the company’s customers with fuel-efficient and affordable engines. He also explained that the hardworking team at Cleveland Engine is very proud to build these two engines that are one of the most technologically advanced engines on the market.
Ford in 2013 had invested around $200 million and added nearly 450 new jobs to support production and rising consumer demand for the EcoBoost engine. Ford had made this move in order to assemble engines regionally to help optimize production capabilities around the world. The production of the twin scroll 2.0 liter and 2.3 liter EcoBoost engines had previously been planned in Valencia, Spain.
However the investment in Cleveland shifted the production to Ohio and left Ford’s Valencia Engine Plant as the exclusive production location of 2.0 liter EcoBoost engine for Ford of Europe built vehicles. Even then the plant in Valencia will continue to machine and ship components for both the engines to North America. The plant in Cleveland is also entrusted with the production of the 3.5 liter EcoBoost engine and 3.7 liter V6 rear wheel drive application. Ford’s facility in Ohio employs more than 1300 people and has also produced more than 1 million EcoBoost engines since 2009. These engines have been used to support the operations of Ford in Mexico, North America, Europe and even Asia Pacific.
Ford’s global engine strategy has been based on to reduce the fuel consumption and emissions of vehicles and so the EcoBoost was introduced in 2009. The EcoBoost engine delivers significantly better fuel economy than larger displacement engines. The EcoBoost basically uses smaller overall engine size combined with turbocharging, gasoline direct injection and variable valve timing.
The EcoBoost engine is now available on 100 percent of the 2015 light duty Ford lineup in North America. Moreover Ford has also produced more than 1.6 million EcoBoost engines globally in 2014 which is 30 percent more from 2013. Now the company produces 190,000 EcoBoost engines every month and in 2014 the annual global EcoBoost engine capacity reached nearly 2.3 million units.
Ford has also been the number one brand of utility vehicles in the U.S for four straight years. The company sold more than 1.4 million utility vehicles around the world in 2014.
