This Is VAIO’s First Smartphone

Sony sold its computer division—VAIO—to Japan Industrial Partners last year to focus on its mobile devices. Now, Sony’s brainchild is going head to head with the company’s Xperia devices. VAIO has announced its first mobile device today, and it’s simply called the VAIO Phone. VAIO plans to launch the phone on Japan’s B-mobile on March 20^th.

True to its name, the VAIO Phone is simple and straightforward, donning a 5-inch 720p display and a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera. Under the hood, you’ll get a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, and 16GB of storage. A 2,500mAh battery powers the device, which is running Android 5.0.

Overall, the VAIO Phone is “okay.” When it hits B-mobile later this month, it will retail for 51,000 yen or about $420. You can also get it for 4,000 yen a month or around $33. VAIO’s owner—Japan Industrial Partners—is planning to raise 4 billion yen in revenue from the phone within five months, according to the Wall Street Journal. It’s worth noting that Sony owns 5 percent of VAIO.
