Giuliana Rancic has always shared her struggles with fertility issues due to breast cancer and recently she received another devastating personal setback. The 40 years old reality star Giuliana Rancic shared the news that her third embryo implanted via a surrogate has ended in miscarriage ending all hope for another biological offspring.
“It was painful,” Giuliana told PEOPLE. “We were so optimistic with this last embryo. We thought, ‘This is definitely going to work. This is our last shot.’ ”
Rancic was found to have breast cancer in 2011 and decided to freeze four of her embryos with husband Bill after the diagnosis. After undergoing a double mastectomy Rancic and her husband welcomed a son named Duke via a surrogate in 2012.
Two more embryos were also successfully implanted in a surrogate in 2014 but the surrogate ended up miscarrying them a few weeks later. Rancic’s only and last remaining embryo was left for implantation but Rancic learned on New Year’s Eve the surrogate had also miscarried the last embryo.
Rancic how the news was a painful blow and she had been very optimistic with the last embryo as it had been her lost shot at another biological baby. Rancic herself cannot get pregnant as she is taking cancer suppressing medication and pregnancy would put her at risk of developing cancer again.
Although the time was really hard for Rancic she is now open to all options of expanding her family even through adoption. Rancic claimed she believes adoption is a beautiful present and she is even more open to adoption now than she was before.
“We’re open to everything,” said the E! host. “I think adoption is a beautiful gift you’re giving each other. And it’s funny, I’m even more open to [adoption] than I was before. Because I think to myself, ‘I love Duke so much, if I couldn’t take care of him, I hope there would be someone else who would love him.’ ”
Rancic thought while taking care of her son Duke who is 2 and a half years old now, if she wasn’t there to take care of her son she hoped someone else would and love him as much as she did. Rancic has documented her entire fertility issue journey in her new memoir which hits shelves on the 7th of April entitled ‘Going Off Script’.
