The next gen smartwatches will not require smartphone connectivity but will have their own SIM slots
The MWC event last month unveiled the Samsung’s Gear 2 line of smartwatches which would be running on the Tizen OS. The new smartwatches will provide all the necessary functions of calling, messaging and notification capabilities from a paired Galaxy smartphone. The pairing requirement however will not be a necessity with the next generation of these Gear 2 watches. They will feature their own SIM slots to allow for the calling feature without the need to get paired with a smartphone.
According to some Korean media outlets, there is apparently a partnership agreement happening between Samsung and Korean carrier SK Telecom and they will togother release a new standalone variant of the Samsung Gear 2. Quite a few sources from within the industry have claimed that what’s more feasible is a telephony-capable smartwatch but this would be an important consideration since a new level of power will have to be taken into account if the phone bits are to be built into it. In the beginning, the device will focus on the Korean market but it is expected to reach the global markets afterwards. On the other hand, the current gen smartwatches will hit retail all over the world.
