Anaheim Ducks Beat Calgary Flames 3-2 In Game 5 OT Thriller

Corey Perry scored an overtime goal to lift the Anaheim Ducks to a 3-2 win in Game 5 against the Calgary Flames in their best-of-seven Stanley Cup Playoff series on /4/10. The Ducks won the series 4-1 and will now face the Chicago Blackhawks in the Western Conference Finals.

The Anaheim Ducks beat the Calgary Flames, 3-2, in overtime of Game 5 of their second-round Stanley Cup Playoff series on /4/10. 

According to Adam Brady of the Ducks’ official website, Anaheim right wing Corey Perry scored the decisive goal 2:26 into overtime to propel his team to a 4-1 series win and a showdown against the Chicago Blackhawks in the Western Conference Finals.

Moments before the goal, Cam Fowler’s foiled attempt resulted in a loose-puck scramble. Brady says Perry recovered on one knee and knocked the puck into the net and underneath the glove of Calgary netminder Karri Ramo, who finished with 44 saves.

The Ducks mobbed Perry before a jubilant crowd at Honda Center in Anaheim.

Perry then discussed his game-winner with Brady at game’s end:

“It didn’t feel great when it happened. I wasn’t sure what was going on. It calmed down after a few minutes. You do anything to come back and help the team win at any part of the season, especially in the playoffs.

“That fourth win is always the hardest one. They were desperate, and they were going to throw everything at us, but we played our game. We really started taking over in the second half, and we found a way.”

The Ducks upped their 2015 playoff record to 8-1 with the win on Sunday. It was their sixth comeback victory of the postseason which boosted their undefeated record at home against the Flames in the past 22 games, per their official website. 

At one point, Perry scoring the game winner was a remote possibility.

Flames Center Matt Stajan’s knee collided with Perry’s with four minutes left in the second period. Sta/1//10//11//12/was not whistled for a penalty while Perry went to the locker room to have his knee checked on. He returned to the ice three minutes later, per Brady. 

After officials whistled Ducks forward Ryan Kesler a double minor for high-sticking midway throught the first period, Flames forward Jiri Hudler scored from the left-wing circle to give his team the early 1-0 lead, per Brady.

Anaheim knotted the count at 1 apiece with almost five minutes gone by in the second period on a Kesler goal off a nifty backhand assist by Jakob Silfverberg. Calgary reclaimed the lead less than a minute later after Johnny Gaudreau scored after recovering a loose puck between the circles.

At the beginning of the third period, Matt Beleskey tipped Francois Beachemin’s shot for a power-play goal to tie the count at 2. The goal stems from a slashing penalty on the Flames’ Mikael Backlund.   

The Ducks will now move on to the fourth Western Conference Finals appearance in franchise history and their first since 2007. It is also head coach Bruce Boudreau’s first conference finals stint in his eight-year NHL head coaching career.

Boudreau told Brady how relieved he was to get the victory:

“It was pretty cool. I was telling the guys I thought I was pretty calm in the third period and overtime, and then Beauchemin missed a chance. It just went wide and and I jumped a solid four inches. Maybe I’m not so calm.

“It was relief because I thought it was one of those games when you press, and you press, and you press and they get a break and they score the goal.”

On the other hand, Flames forward Joe Colborne told The Calgary Herald’s Scott Cruickshank the loss was a bitter pill to swallow:

“There’s a lot of experience that we gained, but it’s tough to think like that right now.

“It sucks. We put a lot of work in this year. We surprised some people…over the next few days, we’ll probably come to think of the positives. It’s just a little hard right now.”
