The School of the Art Institute of Chicago awarded Kanye West with an honorary degree on Monday evening.
Kanye West also gave a speech at the event and multiple questions were asked from the rapper on topics such as art, music and fashion. Although a lot of people had been critical of the awarding of a doctorate degree on the rapper when West took the stage the crowd cheered for him vehemently. The questions were asked by the student sand mostly focused on his creative process rather than the degree.
After Kanye West is announced onstage he took the speaker and thanked all the fans gathered there. Kanye thanked everyone and described how the applause and the appreciation make the fight in the music industry against commercialism easier for him. Kanye then asked the audience to start the conversation with a question having a good vibe.
Kanye shared in answer to a question how he has used the stereotype of a rapper to his advantage and has done so many collaborations with other artists, which has given him diversity.
Kanye also stated whenever he ‘actively’ decides to do something everyone knows about it thanks to the internet. Kanye even went on to address his famous ‘Kanye West’ outburst and then compared music to drugs which needs to be educating especially in the form of background rap.
When asked if his music will feature any inspiration from the current riots happening in many cities Kanye answer he takes a long time to make music like marinating a steak.
He will probably hear about it in 6 months as Kanye has always talked about his history from the last 500 years and how hard it was for him to grow up in rural Chicago. Kanye ended the speech when he called himself like Michelangelo and said he’s rather let people decide on his art.
