Sandra Lee was diagnosed early with breast cancer and has undergone with lumpectomy and double mastectomy with her partner Andrew Cuomo at her side.
Fitness guru and the star chef of Semi-Homemade Cooking With Sandra Lee, Sandra Lee got the news that she had been diagnosed with cancer. The diagnosis had been early and thankfully helped in figuring out her options earlier. Sandra said that the doctors were glad that she had had a mammogram done which helped them catch the disease in its earlier stages.
Sandra was diagnosed with DCIS-ductal carcinoma in situ which is a noninvasive tumor in the milk ducts that can turn invasive in due time if left untreated for a long while.
The common course of treatment for such condition is a lumpectomy followed by radiation and mastectomy. Sandra has been documenting her experience with the affliction in a no-holds barred video. After having the lumpectomy, she revealed that the surgeons didn’t get clean margins. She opted to get double mastectomy rather than suffer through radiation.
After having a mammogram to confirm diagnosis, Lee also went through to testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2, the genes that increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. She tested negative thankfully.
She has had mastectomy on one breast and is having it on the other as well. Her partner for 10 years, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is being fully supportive and is set to be on her side during the procedure. He said that it was more about her feeling comfortable.
Sandra recently said in an interview with Good Morning America that her new mission would be to spread awareness about breast cancer. It will be her new mission other than food. She said that it was an experience that she never want to go through again.
