Smart car tipping in San Francisco leaves angry owners

Police have made no arrests at this time

Vandals in San Francisco are leaving angry car owners and police in their wake. These vandals have been tipping over Smart cars in the San Francisco area. Late Monday night three of the cars were found turned over with a fourth of the small cars fond on its side later Monday morning reports the LA Times.

One witness to the car tipping said that it was a group of eight or more people wearing hoodies that flipped the car over. Police are actively looking for the people, but so far, no arrests have been made.

“All we have right now are multiple suspects wearing black hooded sweatshirts,” San Francisco police Officer Gordon Shyy told KGO-TV.

Smart cars are a ripe target for this kind of vandalism because they are very light and easy for a group to move around. Smart cars weigh in the area of 1500 to 1800 pounds and seat two people. Some believe that the vandalism of the cars could be linked to what is called the gentrification of San Francisco with the cost of living spiraling out of reach of many residents.

Interestingly, the little Smart cars are very inexpensive at around $13,000 new and not something most would tie to wealthy residents. Andrew Smith is one of the Smart car owners whose vehicle was vandalized.

“The Smart car and the gentrification of San Francisco are linked in some people’s minds,” he said.

“Whoever is doing this just has misdirected anger,” Shelley Gallivan said. One of the flipped over cars could be a total loss due to it having rolled onto its roof.
