ABC Developing “Muppet Show Reboot”

ABC Developing "Muppet Show Reboot"

The Disney-owned network is looking to bring the Muppets back to the small screen in 2015.

The co-creator of The Big Bang Theory, Bill Prady, is considering a reboot of the classic Muppet Show, according to Variety. It isn’t the first time that Prady has worked with the puppets and their handlers, he has a long history writing for the brand, including The Jim Henson Hour, Muppet Classic Theater, and a number of Muppet specials. He had no part in the recent Muppet movies, but they were huge successes for the company.

The report follows the announcement of even more remakes and reimaginings from Disney, who owns ABC. The company is also remaking Mulan and Winnie the Pooh in the coming years. Disney acquired the rights for the Muppets in 2004 and have expanded the brand exponentially. The company has not worked with the Muppets on television, as their last venture was a brief stint in 1996.

The working title of the show is “Muppets 2015” and it will see the Muppets navigating today’s world, complete with technology and social issues. Deadline has heard rumors about the show “would be set behind the scenes of a late-night talk show, with most signature Muppets, led by Kermit the Frog, on tap.”

EW reports that Bob Kushell (Anger Management, The Simpsons), will function as the showrunner. There have been no other casting decisions announced. It is unclear which Muppets will be on the show.
