Andy Fraser, Free Bassist and All Right Now co-writer dies at 62

Andy Fraser born in 1952 was the bass player for Free and co-wrote All Right Now when he was only 15.

Andy Fraser is the renowned bassist of the rock band Free and was the co-writer of the hit song All Right Now when he was only 15 has died at the age of 62 in California. Fraser had been living in the desert community of Temecula, California where he finally died on March 16th 2015.

Up till now the cause of Fraser’s death hasn’t been confirmed but the bassist was dealing with AIDS and cancer in recent years. He was diagnosed with HIV and a form of cancer called Kaposi’s sarcoma in 1980 and battled with suicidal thoughts which alleviated when he came out as gay.

Fraser leaves behind two daughters Hannah and Jasmine, his wife Ri, two brothers Gavin and Alex and a sister Gail. Apart from Fraser’s love of music he was also a strong social activist and defender of individual human rights. According to the president of ‘Rock Against Trafficking’ charity which Fraser was an active part of, stated that Fraser did so much for the organization and he will certainly be missed. 

This London born bassist who was expelled from school for refusing to have his hair cut was only 15 when he became a member of John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. This was the same group that had proved to be a training ground for Eric Clapton and Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor. 

Within a year of joining the John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, Fraser became a founding member of the rock band Free. The most prominent and renowned member of the band was the singer and guitarist Paul Rodgers who later would go on to front Bad Company and The Firm.

It was Rodger along with Fraser who wrote the song while they were sitting in the Durham Students Union building. Fraser while remembering the moment stated that the idea for All Right Now came to both the members on a rainy Tuesday night.

He explained that they were playing in a college where they performed in front of only 30 people, who didn’t even pay any attention to them. After that they were all pretty heartbroken in the dressing room and Fraser in order to boost everyone’s morale started to sing “All right now….come on baby, all right now.”
