Possibly the biggest Apple rumor is currently in the headlines. Apple is rumored to work on an electric car.

How long are hearing about an Apple Television? Since about 2009. Apple has still not released an Apple TV and is not expected to do so 2015. Analyst Gene Munster, who predicts the Apple TV since years, said that 2016 launch is likely. Considering that a TV is a much less complex device than a car, the Apple Car rumors will stay with us for a decade at least before Apple is eventually releasing an iCar.

The only way Apple would be able to offer an electric car now is by buying Tesla. Elon Musk’s baby is though very expensive as the market has priced in a lot of future promise into the current stock price.

Apple is doing something with cars. They already try to take over the entertainment system, but the amount of rumors we see now about hiring and research Apple is supposedly conducting is pointing to something big. Just do not expect to see an Apple Car in an Apple Store anytime soon.

Good thing that the whole self-driving aspect of the Apple car rumor is still not confirmed. Reuters reports that Apple is working a self-driving car, while the initial rumor reveal on the Wall Street Journal does not mention self-driving.

Self-driving cars have limited application. I can imagined self-driving pods in the cities of the future. The environment needs to have though a certain controlled nature. I just don’t see cars without drivers in a bustling downtown situation to be save.

The electric car in general has great promise, but the are still big unsolved problems. Besides the battery the overall gigantic clean energy production necessary for the transition from fossil to electric is puzzling.

Let’s revisit the Apple Car again in 2025.
