Ben Carson is thinking about running for President in 2016. This morning he made a very out there statement about why he thinks being gay is a choice.

Ben Carson is a potential Republican candidate for the 2016 Presidential election. The 63-year-old neurosurgeon announced to think about running earlier this week. This morning he has been on CNN and he told host Chris Cuomo when asked about if people have control over homosexuality. His answer is rather surprising for a neurosurgeon.

He said: “Absolutely. Because a lot of people who go into prison, go into prison straight, and when they come out they are gay. So did something happen while they were in there?” Cuomo countered that he does not believe that this is a basis for understanding homosexuality.

You would expect from a neurosurgeon a more scientific understanding of homosexuality. To bring in the topic of prisons into this is very far fetched and ill-conceived.

While its not entirely understood scientifically why someone turns out to be gay it is not a choice. According to Wikipedia, “Scientists favor biologically-based theories, which point to genetic factors, the early uterine environment, both, or the inclusion of genetic and social factors. There is no substantive evidence which suggests parenting or early childhood experiences play a role when it comes to sexual orientation, when it comes to same-sex sexual behavior, shared or familial environment plays no role for men and minor role for women.”

Watch out for the Daily Show with Jon Stewart to pick up on Ben Carson. It is very likely he makes the cut today on the show.
