Blake Shelton has been tapped to sing the national anthem at Super Bowl XLIX.

Update: Idina Menzel is singing the Super Bowl 2015 National Anthem.

A source confirmed this to HollywoodLife.com’s Suan Johnson on Jan. 5:

The Super Bowl organizers are looking to mix it up a little bit for the person to do the national anthem. They want a guy and they have asked Blake Shelton.

“He hasn’t responded to it yet but they are anticipating a yes and they want to make the announcement during an upcoming playoff game. So they are looking to lock the performer in by the end of the week. But Blake is on top of the list.”

Johnson says Shelton, who was a judge on the popular show “The Voice,” has the versatility to be a great national anthem singer for the big game on Feb. 1 in Glendale

Among Shelton’s hits are “Austin,” “The Baby,” “Some Beach,” “Home,” “She Wouldn’t Be Gone,” “All About Tonight,” “Who Are You When I’m Not Looking,” “Honey Bee,” “God Gave Me You,” “Drink On It,” “Over and “Sure Be Cool If You Did,” per The Arizona Republic’s Ed Masley.

Masley wrote a review about Shelton’s performance at the Ak-Chin Pavilion in Phoenix in Sept. 2014:

“Blake Shelton knows what his audience wants — a good time where the drinking songs are somehow flowing faster than the drinks themselves. And he was happy to oblige in the course of the two-hour Friday night concert at Ak-Chin Pavilion in Phoenix, setting the tone for the sold-out performance with a boozy celebration of the moment,’All About Tonight.'”

Should Shelton accept the invitation, the event promises to be a star-studded affair once again with Katy Perry taking center stage during the Super Bowl Pepsi Halftime Show. Another HollywoodLife.com source tells Johnson Perry is preparing hard for it. She said,”Katy is in complete rehearsal mode for her Super Bowl performance, she wants him to make it feel like a complete party and something that will be remembered forever.”

In other news, Super Sunday HQ launched a mobile phone party app on Jan. 7, per The Arizona Republic’s Kellie Hwang. The application will help Super Bowl fans know the latest parties and happenings on their phone.

Hwang says Super Sunday HQ goes to the Super Bowl’s host city every year “to report on the big soirees and all the gossip behind them, including celebrity and athlete appearances.” Once a user downloads the app, he or she can access event information, buy tickets and organize their itineraries. Popular topics, photos and happenings are all featured on its feed, per Hwang.

The Super Sunday HQ party app is available for iPhone and Android devices.
