St. Louis Rams wide receiver Brian Quick sustained a shoulder injury while attempting to haul in a pass during the Rams’ 34-7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 26. He, along with left tackle Jake Long, is ruled out for the rest of the 2014 NFL season.

According to an Oct. 27 update from Myles Simmons of the Rams’ official website, head coach Jeff Fisher said Quick suffered “significant damage to his shoulder” while trying to haul in a catch during the second quarter of their game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Left tackle Jake Long is also out for the rest of the year due to a torn ACL:
“Rams head coach Jeff Fisher announced at his press conference on Monday that left tackle Jake Long and wide receiver Brian Quick both suffered season-ending injuries on Sunday.
“‘Jake has re-torn his ACL. He will be out for the remainder of the season,’ Fisher said. ‘Brian Quick will also be out for the remainder of the season. He has significant damage to his shoulder.’
“A veteran offensive tackle, Long tore his ACL against the Buccaneers in Week 16 of last season. Fisher said on Monday that Long sustained a hit to the outside of his leg against the Chiefs to re-tear the ACL. With Sam Bradford suffering the same type of re-injury, Fisher brought up the quarterback in discussing Long on Monday.
“‘Everything that we said about Sam when Sam went down needs to be repeated for Jake,’ Fisher said. ‘Jake worked really, really hard to get back. And it’s kind of an isolated incident, isolated contact, and it’s just kind of a freak thing. We just appreciate him…his work, and the difficulty associated with coming back from that injury. But he’s done it once, and he’ll do it again.’
“The head coach said that Long had bee playing particularly well just before the injury.
“‘He had an issue a couple of weeks ago, but last week he played really good — played his best game to date last week,’ Fisher said. ‘And he was off to a great start in the game. He was strong, he was stout. He was just playing well. So, it’s very fortunate.’
“With Long out for the season, Fisher said the first-round pick Greg Robinson will slide over to left tackle. The rookie moved there from left guard during the game, and the head coach said that Robinson will be fine at the position.
“‘They had outstanding rushers, but he was strong and stout,’ Fisher said. ‘That’s what he does. He’ll have a week to work on the footwork and things like that this week.’
“In his third season, Quick led St. Louis wide receivers in receptions (25), yards receiving (375), and touchdowns (three). Through just seven games, the wideout posted career highs in each of those categories.

“‘He was very productive,’ Fisher said of Quick. ‘He took advantage of all the opportunities, made tough plays, made tough catches, and we’re going to miss him.’
“In Quick’s absence, Fisher named both Stedman Bailey and Chris Givens as players who will have an opportunity to step up. Givens, in his third season, caught a key 30-yard pass in the victory over the (Seattle) Seahawks, and has six receptions for 92 yards in 2014. Named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his 90-yard punt return against Seattle, Bailey caught two passes for 33 yards against Kansas City.
“Of course, the Rams currently have Kenny Britt and Tavon Austin on the active roster at wide receiver as well.”
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Jim Thomas goes into greater detail on how Quick sustained his season-ending injury on Sunday:
“At first glance, it was an innocent-looking play. Quick was running a comeback route on first-and-10 from the St. Louis 20 with just under 12 minutes to play in the first half. He was aggressively wrestled to the ground by Kansas City cornerback Jamell Fleming after a 10-yard gain.
“Quick landed on his left shoulder, attempting to brace the fall by landing on his elbow. That was Quick’s 25th catch of the season, and unfortunately for Quick and the Rams, it turns out to be his last.
“In what was shaping up as a breakout year for Quick, a third-year player from Appalachian State, he finishes the year with 25 catches for 375 yards and three touchdowns. Quick currently ranks first on the team in reception yards and is second in receptions (to tight end Jared Cook’s 27 catches).
“Stedman Bailey is the likely successor to Quick’s job in the starting lineup.”
