Cary Fukunaga Exits as Director of Horror Movie It

The “True Detective” director is reportedly quitting film over budgetary issues

Director Cary Fukunaga is no longer a part of New Lines’ upcoming film “It”. 

The “True Detective” director has reportedly part ways with the studios after having conflicts over multiple issues. The shooting of the film was scheduled to start in the mid-June but after the departure of the director the project has been pushed for an indefinite period of time, reports TheWrap.

The 37-year old Cary Fukunaga, who was hired as the director of the film back in June 2012, was having frequent clashes with the studio. “It” was originally started by Warner Bros. but moved to New Lines recently, which could possibly be a reason to quit film. 

The major issue which forced Fukunaga to leave the project was the budget. New Lines demanded to make a film in a rather limited budget as proposed earlier which Fukunaga reportedly declined as he did not want to comprise his creativity and artistic vision at the expense of budget cuts especially he had a strong desire to shoot the film in New York which was more expensive than the other locales.

The film “It”, which is the adaptation of the Stephen King’s classic novel of the same name, was originally decided to be made in two parts, one focuses on the kids while the other depicts an adult story.

The first adaptation will follow a group of kids who face and encounter a sadistic clown named Pennywise who is a sign of terror for the town of Maine and preys on children. Many years later, they again happened to meet the same creature but now confront with him as being adults which is the storyline of the second adaptation.

“We’re the Millers” actor Will Poulter was in negotiations to play the role of clown Pennywise but no further progress regarding his signing is provided after the abrupt departure of the director.

The 1986 Stephen Kings novel was previously adapted into a miniseries in 1990 which aired on ABC and featured Jon Ritter, Harry Anderson, Tim Reid, Annette O’Toole and Tim Curry as Pennywise
