Colin Farrell Confirms Role in HBO’s True Detective

Irish actor Colin Farrell’s confirmed a starring role in True Detective’s second season. And that’s not all he’s spilling.

Blogs and news outlets are reporting that Colin Farrell (Winter’s Tale, Total Recall) will be starring in the second series of True Detective. The Sunday World claims to have exclusively learned that the deal is all but done. But in the case of starring roles, audiences know to never believe it until you see it.

The Dublin-born actor supposedly offered a few details about his role in the detective series to one Irish news. Telling Sunday World that “I’m doing the second series. I’m so excited.” Entertainment Weekly‘s saying the deal’s “either done, or very close to it.” But it wouldn’t be a surprise if the actor chose to work on the series after the renewed interest in the first season’s costars.

True Detective‘s been a breakout hit for HBO, earning critical acclaim for both Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Show creator Nic Pizzolatto‘s been mum on the next phase of the series, except to say a new set of cops will be leading the gritty drama.

Rumors have been circulating for months that top actors have been vying for rules. Vince Vaughan (Swingers, The Internship), Rachel McAdams (The Notebook, The Vow), Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights, John Carter) and Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men, Get Him to the Greek) have all been associated with the show recently.

The Irish Mirror insinuates that McAdams and Moss are competing for the role of the hard-drinking, rough-and-rumble sheriff. Meanwhile Vaughan’s centered on playing Frank Semyon, a former thug that’s gone businessman with a few shady areas left.

Kitsch /4/play one of three police officials looking to solve the murder of a corrupt businessman whose death leaves more questions than answers. And Farrell’s set to play Ray Velcoro, an emotionally damaged cop.

Farrell supposedly confirmed the season will again be eight episodes and should “take around four or five months to shoot.” Pizzolatto’s expected to write the second season. News on who’ll be directing is another mystery since Cary Fukunaga won’t be returning. The Independent‘s considering the use of multiple directors as the detectives chase the killer.

Speculation’s put the show in California and is expected to begin filming this fall with a summer premiere. As to the exact location, the actor reports the show should be “in the environs of L.A.,” which pleases him since “I get to stay home and see the kids.”

However, none of these are confirmed by the network or showrunner. Right now, it’s a bit of guesswork until set photos are leaked or put out by HBO. If Farrell is one of the lead characters, the audience can expect the same intensity on screen that McConaughey and Harrelson executed so well in the first season of True Detective.
