- Indigenous People’s Day.
Chances are you have to work today on Columbus Day, despite it is a Holiday.
Today is Columbus Day in America. Not only have most workers not a day off today, but some cities celebrate Indigenous People’s Day instead. Columbus Day seems to lose its right of existence.
CNN reports that for the first time this year Seattle and Minneapolis will celebrate today Indigenous People’s Day to shift the focus away from Christopher Columbus to the people who have been first in America.
This shift in focus away from Columbus does not sit well with the Italian Americans now. And there we go. The Columbus Day controversy is in full swing.
How about just canceling Columbus Day 2015 all together? Some states like Hawaii, Alaska and Oregon have no Columbus Day holiday already.
Columbus Day seems to trigger the most criticism this year. I don’t remember seeing so many critical comments in the past years. See what Twitter has to say:
If the Redskins have to change their name they need to ban Christopher Columbus day too— Versace Mo$es (@THEREALGPHRESH) October 13, 2014
There is Nothing Happy about Columbus day.
I will not Celebrate Murder – Rape – Slavery.

I don’t want to be wished a Happy Columbus Day. The name “Columbus Day” is celebrating the last stage of genocide; denial that it happened.— Andrew Slack (@andrewslack) October 13, 2014
Columbus Day is a federal holiday, which means only non-essential federal workers get the day off. This includes for instance postal workers.
Where there is just a hint of Holiday there are sales promoted by retailers. If you happen to get off today you can do some Columbus Day sale shopping at Kmart for instance. The Kmart Columbus Day Sale offers an extra 10% off on a broad range of offers. See the deals here.
