The iconic teen drama is picked up by Netflix after TeenNick announced its cancellation last week

The long running Canadian teen drama “Degrassi” finds a new home on Netflix after being cancelled by TeenNick recently.

The streaming service announced Tuesday on Twitter that Degrassi is coming to Netflix. Meet the Next Class in 2016.

“For more than three decades, this groundbreaking show has been reaching teens with important stories and starting in 2016 our members around the world will be able to enjoy and discover the newest chapters of this great show,” said Erik Barmack, vice president of global content at Netflix. “We are so excited to bring Degrassi: Next Class to the world.”

Degrassi is renamed Degrassi: Next Class for the fifteenth and upcoming season and 20 fresh episodes will be broadcast on both Canada’s Family Channel and streaming provider Netflix as a part of new season starting in early 2016. The show originally went on air as “The Kids of Degrassi Street” in 1979. “We are energized and exciting to work with Family Channel as we tell stories for the new post-millennial teen cohort known as Generation Z, most of whom weren’t even born when Degrassi returned in 2001.” Co-creator and executive producer Linda Schuler told Entertainment Weekly.

Degrassi, which made a debut in 2001, focuses on the lives of high-school kids and the various challenges they face on day to day basics such as racism, substance abuse, sexuality, violence and self image. The new season is expected to follow the same storyline but with some more fresh and important issues. In the new season, most of current cast will reprise their roles including Amanda Arcuri, Reiya Downs, Ana Golja and Ricardo Hoyos.

Last week, TeenNick announced to cancel the show after completing 14 seasons. The show will conclude on TeenNick with two week finale event, kicking off with one hour-long special on July 20, followed by new episode everyday and ending with the final episode on 31 July.

The numerous variations of Degrassi have been aired over the past 30 years which makes it one of the longest running television shows in Canadian history.
