Not a day goes by when the sneaky Edward Snowden doesn’t let out a novel piece of news that shocks the world. The latest is that the whistleblower has proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the NSA and GCHQ spied on WikiLeaks and its founder Julian Assange. Even those who visited WikiLeaks were not spared according to Snowden.

The outrage is understandable. The latest leakage from Edward Snowden shows that WikiLeaks was under surveillance for abetting terrorists during the Afghanistan Operation by the US Army.

Both the NSA and its UK counterpart, the GCHQ spied on WikiLeaks and its founder Julian Assange not to mention all the traffic on the site. Among the activities carries out by these spy-craft agencies were overseeing the website and charging those caught with being guilty of various offenses.

The whole scale persecution of the relatively benign and the witch hunt carried out against WikiLeaks proves that we are truly living in the Orwellian 1984 totalitarian state of Big Brother.

WikiLeaks only leaks government documents beforehand in order to allow for timely journalism. But the way in which those attached to it were prosecuted is cause for regret. It shows the lack of respect for individual privacy and the hacking of confidentiality by the government agencies.

Something that was especially sad was the monitoring of the traffic that entered the realm of the website. Even of someone had clicked on to the site by sheer chance he or she was included in the NSA and GCHQ’s surveillance list.

This is very tragic and the height of shameful behavior for both the United States and the UK. Termed a malicious foreign actor, WikiLeaks was targeted as a threat to the state. But it was never that much of a danger in the first place.

Julian Assange has said that he will sue the agencies for this blatant act of sabotage. He has called upon President Obama to take serious steps against both the NSA and the GCHQ.
