Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and CEO of SpaceX and Tesla Motors, has confirmed that his space company is developing low-cost micro-satellites that will bring Internet access across the globe. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report about Musk’s new venture: Internet satellites. According to the report last week, Musk is working with satellite-industry veteran Greg Wyler, the founder of WorldVu Satellites Ltd.

In a post on his Twitter account, Musk confirmed that “SpaceX is in the early stages of developing advanced micro-satellites.” He added that the project will be announced in the coming months. When asked if his tweet is pertaining to the arrival of free and unfettered Internet access for the masses, Musk replied “unfettered certainly and at very low cost.” In last week’s report, the Wall Street Journal said, citing insider sources, that SpaceX is launching around 700 satellites, each weighing 250 pounds or less.
