You’ll finally be able to share an emoji that looks like you, or at least more like your skin color.
Most of us can relate to the feeling where we don’t feel so enthusiastic about sending someone an emoji simply because it looks no way like us. Well, this is going to change because you can finally be able to send an emoji which looks like you. It probably doesn’t look like you but it will at least have your skin color. These tiny digital images for expressing emotions are now getting some racial diversity and we are quite happy about it.
This update was proposed on Monday by Unicode Consortium, which is the group that governs the emoji standard. The update is going to address the problem of racial diversity. Even though it was noted at the announcement that these emojis are meant to be generic, the color choices still made them un-relatable to a large group of people. The color choices were invariably light-toned or yellow and this doesn’t take into account the vast swaths of the human population.
The change is going to come over next year and according to the organization, Unicode 8.0, which is still in draft form, is going to add five symbol modifier characters which people can use to create a range of skin tones on their human-like emoji. According to Unicode, six available skin tones are based on the dermatological standard Fitzpatrick scale.
