No more online gaming 🙂
I would wager there are a bunch of gamers out there that still play online with their Wii and DS consoles. If you are one of those gamers, your days of playing Mario Kart or Pokémon online are numbered. Nintendo has announced that it is ending the Wi-Fi connect service.
That means that as of /4/20 Wii and DS players will no longer be able to play games online. To add insult to injury, while Nintendo is removing online gaming capability, it will continue to allow gamers on the Wii and DS consoles to buy games via their respective online stores.
In other words, you can spend money on new games but you can’t play any of your favorites online. The end of online access will mean that hardcore gamers out there /4/just walk away from these consoles. I can’t see this as a good thing for Nintendo. The company is hurting now with gamers not wanting to buy the 3DS portable or the Wii U.
It’s worth noting that both the Wii U and 3DS will retain their ability to play online games. This sounds like a way to try to push gamers on older devices to upgrade. Along with no more online play, the Wii and DS consoles will also lose the matchmaking and leaderboards functions. The games will still be playable in offline mode according to Nintendo.
